What kind of Church is this?

The church of Christ that meets at Oak Grove:

A NON-DENOMINATIONAL CHURCH
The Oak Grove congregation is a non-denominational Christian Church. We are interested in organizing the church in the 21st century in matters of faith, teaching, and character like the church was when she came into existence in the first century (Acts 2). We don’t want to customize the church to suit our desires, but to restore the church to her biblical authority.

When the church was established on the Day of Pentecost in about A.D. 33, and for the first few hundred years thereafter, there were no denominations – there was simply “the church” in Jerusalem, Philippi, Ephesus, Antioch, etc.

Did you know it is possible to just be a Christian and a member of the body of Christ – the church? Sounds simple, huh? Wouldn’t such a spirit create unity in Christendom if people would just be Christians and let Jesus’ church wear His name? After all, He said, “Upon this rock I will build My church” (Matt. 16:18). Does the Oak Grove Church of Christ have a headquarters? Yes, it is in heaven – where Jesus is!

A CHURCH THAT SEEKS TO PLEASE GOD
Scripture teaches our goal in all things must be to please God (2 Corinthians 5:9). We are not interested in building a church that has as her mission “pleasing people.” We don’t take polls by asking people, “What kind of church would you build if you were building a church?” We ask God, “What kind of congregation (people) do You want us to be?” After all, the church belongs to Jesus. He bought and paid for the church with His life and blood (Acts 20:28). When the church pleases God, people will be loved, treated correctly, and convicted about their need for a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The Oak Grove congregation strives to “love God and love each other.”

A CHURCH WHERE YOU CAN CONNECT WITH OTHERS
Perhaps you remember the theme song to Cheers?
“Wouldn’t you like to get away? Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name, and they’re always glad you came. You want to be where you can see our troubles are all the same. You want to be where everybody knows your name. You want to go where people know, people are all the same, you want to go where everybody knows your name.”
The Oak Grove congregation is a place where you can connect with other believers and get to know people personally.

A CHURCH WHERE EVERYONE IS EQUALLY IMPORTANT
Jesus didn’t just see crowds of people; He saw people in the crowds. He saw Zaccheus the tax-collector when no one else did or cared (Luke 19:5). He talked to the Samaritan woman at the well when other men would not have done so according to her (John 4:9). He challenged the prosecutors of a woman caught in a sinful act to examine their own life before they corrected others (John 8:7). He asked a ravaged, demon-possessed man, “what is your name” (Mark 5:9)? Jesus treated everyone the same. Someone has said, “The ground is level at the foot of the cross.” At the Oak Grove congregation, everyone is equally important regardless of age, ethnicity, social status, education or background because Romans 2:11 says, “For there is no partiality with God.”

A CHURCH WHERE YOUR PAST IS NOT AS IMPORTANT AS YOUR FUTURE
We believe God is more concerned with where you are going than where you have been. We see the church as a hope center, a help center, and a healing center. We understand that every sinner has a past, that everyone has fallen short (sinned), and that every saint (Christian) has a future. We don’t emphasize what you can’t do with an endless list of rules, regulations, and religiosity, but rather what you can do in Christ! The apostle Paul said, “forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead” (Philippians 3:13). We are interested in people developing a personal, vibrant, growing, life-changing relationship with Jesus.

A CHURCH THAT IS RELEVANT TO YOUR LIFE
We strive to deliver biblical sermons and lessons on Sundays (and Wednesdays) that will help you on Monday morning (and throughout the week). We don’t have it all together and neither do we have it all figured out, but we worship a God who does and One who specializes in impossible situations! We are not asking you to put on a happy face and “come to church.” We are asking you to come as you are and be willing to let go and let God take the reins of your of life. A Christian is not just a person who “comes to church” but one who is the church. The Oak Grove congregation (or the church of Christ that meets at Oak Grove) is a group of people (Christians) loving God and loving one another. Will you join us?

A CHURCH WHERE CHILDREN AND YOUTH ARE IMPORTANT
Some have said, “The youth are the church of tomorrow.” Actually, they are the church of today also. Our children’s ministry offers a safe place for babies (Nursery) and toddlers (Deep Blue – 3 years old to K) as well as children’s worship (Big City Studio – 1st to 6th grade) on Sundays. Our children’s ministry guides our children in learning to worship God on their own level during our adult worship. Children learn to praise Jesus with lessons that are Bible-based and relevant to their age level. We do not have one individual “Youth Minister”, but we do have loving and dedicated parents who are “youth ministers” to all of our children and youth.
